There are thousands of different types of trees in the world, and all of them have unique and incredible characteristics.

Some trees contain medicines, some provide homes for hundreds of animal and insect species and even different species of plant life.

Did you know some trees live for thousands of years? Imagine all the life and history those trees have seen! I’d like to introduce you to the ancient Redwood Trees in Northern California and the Sequoia Trees in Central California, found in Sequoia National Park.

The Redwood Trees showed up around when the dinosaurs did. That’s how long they have been part of our planet. Some Redwood trees are close to 2000 years old. Redwoods are also the tallest trees on earth. The tallest one is 379 feet tall. The trunks of the biggest Redwoods are so wide that it would take an entire classroom of kids holding hands to wrap around them.

Giant Sequoia Trees are cousins to the Redwood Trees and can also grow to 300 feet tall. One Sequoia named General Sherman is not only the largest living tree but the largest living organism on the planet. General Sherman is 2,100 years old, weighs 2.7 million pounds, is 275 feet tall, and has a 102-foot circumference.

The Amazon Rainforest in South America is home to more than 4 BILLION trees of 16,000 varieties.
